Walter BarberWalter Barber

Over the last two decades, Walter has studied a variety of martial disciplines developing a unique set of skills by obtaining black belt rankings in multiple systems and certifications as a personal trainer and an NRA firearms instructor.  His skill set draws heavily from his study of Atienza Kali, Sanuces Ryu Jujitsu and Pramek Adaptive Combatives.  By trade, Walter is a highly decorated firefighter and licensed paramedic.  His career in public safety as found him fighting fires, responding to life threatening EMS calls and serving as a member of his department’s special operations teams as a Hazardous Materials Technician and special rescue (high angle rope, confined space, structural collapse and trench rescue) technician.  A founding member of his agency’s special operations tactical medic team, he trained with local law enforcement and was awarded for his achievements in firearms marksmanship upon graduation of the police academy.  As a tactically trained medic he responded with local and federal SWAT teams, including the US Marshals Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force, during high risk warrant service.  As a first responder, martial artist and personal trainer, he believes training is about being prepared for life’s battles physically, mentally and spiritually.Through the years, Walter has had the opportunity to study with many great teachers and innovators of the arts: Tuhon Carl Atienza of Atienza Kali (under Guro Steve Broughman); Professor Khris Allen (Sanuces Ryu Jujitsu, Grandmaster Moses Powell’s “Godson”);  Grandmaster Eddie Monger (Thunder Kickboxing); Pramek Adaptive Combatives founder Matt Powell; Grandmaster Dustin Seale (Kyusho Combatives); Grandmaster TA Frazier (Jodoryu Jujitsu); and Master Josh Moree (Atlanta Kempo & Jujitsu).  It is through this broad lens that he has been able to appreciate the martial concepts that are universal to self-defense.  “I have been blessed to have worked with both gifted practitioners of the arts and side-by-side with those actively engaged in combatives on a daily basis.  I have come across many techniques; the truth lies in their efficacy in real conflict.”Walter is also a certified CrossFit Level I Instructor, Olympic Weightlifting Instructor and Movement & Mobility Coach.  He serves as the physical fitness coordinator for a metro area fire department and is a long time personal trainer.  His fitness experience ranges from bodybuilding to CrossFit to Olympic Weightlifting and strength training.  As an NRA certified firearms instructor, Walter has taught many new and experienced shooters alike helping them to develop fundamental skills and/or take their shooting to the next level.
